| An Ashanti strip weave-Kente cloth
known locally as nwentoma
from Ghana measuring 116" in length and 58" wide.
The textile is brocaded warp-faced strip weave with weft-faced
bands. Sixteen strips were edge-sewn to compose this beautiful
large kente cloth.
Locally
grown cotton is spun
into yarn usually by
women. The yarn is then scrubbed with starch and then allowed
to dry before it is wound onto bobbins. The yarn may be dyed in
many colors. Besides cotton, silk, lurex, and rayon are used
as yarn for weaving Kente.
