| A beautifully carved old female Tabwa ancestor figure from the DRC/formerly Zaire. Tabwa figure sculptures are noted for their decorative surface treatment which often takes the form of symmetrical patterns of raised cicatrices arranged in parallel lines on the forehead, cheeks, torso and on the back. These patterns were intended to be both erotic and symbolic. Tabwa ancestor figures were carved as prestige objects and their role was to assert the chief's authority. This figure measures 12 1/2" in height. |
