| Beautifully carved old Tabwa ancestor figures from the DRC ~ formerly Zaire. Tabwa figure sculptures are noted for their decorative surface treatment, which often takes the form of symmetrical patterns of raised cicatrices arranged in parallel lines on the forehead, cheeks, torso, and back and were intended to be both erotic and symbolic. Tabwa wood figures represent the ancestors and they functioned as protective images and as a visual reinforcement of political authority. The female figure measures 10 1/2" in height and the male figure measures 10 3/4" in height. |
