| This Mbuya mask comes from the Western Pende who live in the Kwango River region in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Pende are known for their artistic forms ranging from figural sculptures, carved ivory pendants, and a wide variety of masks. In dances of the Western Pende (Kwilu), the Mbuya masks are characterized by delicate features and fiber headdresses. They usually personify the chief or other dignitaries. This old Pende Mbuya mask measures 9 1/2" in height. |
