| A very large, old Naga basket measuring 20" in
height and 21" in diameter.
Basketry among the Nagas
is a highly developed art form. Every man makes baskets for his
own use. These baskets are significant symbols of the simple and
yet complex nature of the people in the hills.
Each basket has its use and the use determines its shape. Conical baskets are used to carry heavy loads across large distances while cylindrical baskets are used for storage. The conical baskets are made from split bamboo and the splits are interlaced in a manner similar to threads interlaced in weaving. |
