An old mask from the Luba culture of the DRC~formerly Zaire.  The intricate scarifications are viewed as signs of civilization (the village).  This Luba mask would be danced during rites associated with the new moon, funerals, and initiations of the 'baksanji' society whose function was to purify the community of the evil spirits of sorcerers and the dead.  This fine mask measures 18" in height.
