| The mountain peoples of northern Luzon in the Philippines have long been known as the Igorot, supplied by the Spanish and translated as 'mountain people'. The Igorot are divided into various tribal groups--the most important of these, from the artistic standpoint, is the Ifugao. Probably the best know Philippine sculptures are the bulul--the rice granary gods. The bulul represent a class of deities with human attributes who are associated with bountiful harvest. This very old bulul sculpture measures 26" in height. |
