An old Dogon mask from the people of Mali. The Dogon people lead lives of physical austerity and spiritual wealth.  Their beliefs are expressed through art forms laden with symbolism.  Dogon masks are used primarily for funerals.  There are over seventy mask types that depict a variety of mammals, reptiles, birds, persons and inanimate objects.  Each mask has a  mythical significance and plays a specific role in the sequence of dances.  This fine old Dogon mask measures 15" in height.
