Dan

Dan masks are usually used by male associations for rituals, education, social control and entertainment. Masks were thought to embody the most powerful of spirit forces called gle. Each gle has its own character. They brought control and order to village life.  Small masks were used by the Dan and other groups to validate ownership of larger ceremonial masks, as charms to protect their owners, and to identify rank in men's associations and locality, thereby functioning as "passport masks". This fine mask measures 7" in height--stand is included.
