| An old Dan Kaogle mask from the Dan people, who are also known by the name Yacuba and who live in the western part of the Ivory Coast and into Liberia where the land is forested in the south and bordered by a savannah in the north. Dan masks are usually used by male associations for rituals, education, social control and entertainment. Masks were thought to embody the most powerful of spirit forces called gle. Each gle has its own character which contributed in bringing control and order to village life. This old Dan Kaogle mask measures 12" in height. |
