An exceptional old Bundu mask from the people of Sierra Leone.   Senior members wear helmet masks that embody Sande's guardian spirit, Sowo.  The masks usually include an elaborate symbolic hairstyle connoting beauty, health, and wealth . Other mask characteristics are a high, clear forehead and small, compressed facial features representing serene feminine beauty. Originally, Bundu masks all had a dark raffia collar and were worn with a full, dark costume of raffia or cloth.  The Bundu mask is carved for one of the few all female secret societies in Africa. The Sande society  arranges the education of young girls in the responsibilities of adult life. The Bundu mask embodies the ideal female beauty. This exceptional mask measures 16: in height and 9 1/2" wide.
