An old and beautifully carved female figure from the Baule people of the Ivory Coast well known for quality and detail of their carving. The quiet, dignified figures can embody a nature spirit, asie usu, or serve as a spiritual spouse, blolo bian or blolo bla-- either must be placated with care for they function as the home of a spirit to whom sacrifices are made. This nicely carved Baule female figure measures 11 3/4"in height.   The red color is a representation of light color skin, particularly appreciated by the Baule people.
